Easy Dressing: The Women's Edit

An easy garment is one that requires no decisions after you put it on. Nothing to tuck, nothing to adjust, nothing that only works with one specific other item. That is the whole definition, and it explains why the dress and the kurta have outlasted every trend in Indian womenswear.

What makes a garment genuinely easy

• It is one decision, not two. A dress or a kurta set is a complete outfit. Separates require you to solve a matching problem before coffee.
• It does not need a specific undergarment. Anything requiring particular straps or shapewear is not easy, however good it looks.
• It works at two temperatures. Comfortable in an air-conditioned office and outdoors at four in the afternoon. This is the requirement most garments fail in Indian cities.
• It survives a full day without adjustment. No riding up, no tucking, no rearranging.
• It washes without ceremony. Anything needing dry cleaning is a garment you will wear less than you think.

How to build a wardrobe of easy clothes

Start by counting what you actually wear

Most people wear a fifth of what they own. Look at that fifth and find what it has in common. Usually it is a shape rather than a colour, and usually it is looser than the rest of the wardrobe. That shape is your answer.

Buy more of what already works

If you reach for the same cut of dress repeatedly, own three. Variety across shapes you do not wear is not variety, it is storage.

Hold one palette

Two neutrals plus one accent means every separate goes with every other, which turns six garments into far more outfits than six garments should produce. The same logic applied to menswear is in men's elevated basics.

Let one piece carry the interest

A print, a texture or a shape. Everything else plain. This is why a printed dress with plain sandals works and a printed dress with a printed bag does not.

Fabric and why cut beats fibre

Cotton, cut loose, is the answer to most of the Indian year. Hold fabric to the light before buying: an open weave breathes, a dense one does not, whatever the thread count.

The reason cut matters more than fabric is physical. Fabric touching skin conducts heat into you, so a relaxed garment is measurably cooler than a fitted one in the same cotton. Expect some shrinkage on the first wash with unfinished cotton, and expect small-batch colours to shift slightly between runs. Cold wash, inside out, line dry in shade, no fabric softener.

Dressing one outfit up or down

The same cotton dress covers a working day and an evening. What changes is not the garment.

Down: flat sandals, hair up, no jewellery, a tote.

Up: the same dress with earrings, a smaller bag and better shoes. Jewellery does more here than any change of clothing, which is why a small set of pieces you actually like is worth more than another dress.

1. One relaxed dress in a neutral you already wear
2. One kurta, plain, for the hottest weeks
3. Wide trousers, which make every top you already own easier
4. A second dress in the same cut as the first if you found yourself reaching for it
5. Earrings, which do more for an outfit than a fifth garment would

Clothing decisions are mood decisions as much as homeware ones are. Most of what makes a garment easy is really about how you want to feel arriving somewhere, which is the method set out in what is mood-led living.

Easy does not mean shapeless

The worry with relaxed clothing is disappearing into it. The fix is proportion rather than tightness, and it takes one decision per outfit rather than a different wardrobe.

• Let volume live in one place. A full skirt with a neater top, or a relaxed dress with the sleeves pushed up. When every element billows equally, the silhouette goes. When one does, the outfit has a shape without a single fitted seam.
• Show a line, any line. Neck, wrist or ankle. An open collar and a rolled sleeve do for a loose garment what a belt does for a fitted one, without the belt.
• Keep lengths deliberate. A hem that lands decisively, at the ankle or below the knee, reads as chosen. A hem that hovers uncertainly between lengths is what makes loose look accidental.
• Let earrings finish it. Relaxed clothing leaves the area near the face quiet, which is exactly why earrings read so strongly against a plain dress. One considered piece does what a second layer of clothing cannot.

None of this adds a minute to getting dressed. It is the same one-decision outfit, with the decision spent where it shows.
