The legs and tail on this turtle bell are modelled separately and hung so they swing independently of the shell, which gives it more movement than a one-piece bell. The shell is ochre with grey-blue cross-hatch flowers and a row of daisies around the rim, all built in nerikomi and laid up by hand. Hang it in a window and the parts move at different speeds in the same breeze.
Nerikomi: the pattern is built through the clay before the piece is formed, and every piece is cut by hand, so no two are identical.
