A standing elephant whose body opens into a pot, ringed in concentric rust and blue laid through the clay.

Hathi is the elephant, and this one is a planter: a standing elephant whose back opens into a pot, ringed in concentric rust and blue. The rings are nerikomi, coloured clays laminated together before the piece was formed, so the pattern runs right through the wall rather than sitting on the surface. Turn it over and the pattern is on the foot too. The inside is glazed dark so the opening reads as depth. For a succulent, a few pens, or nothing at all.

Nerikomi: the pattern is built through the clay before the piece is formed, and every piece is cut by hand, so no two are identical.
