Chashma is Hindi for spectacles, and this owl has been given a pair, green-rimmed, over wide amber eyes, which gives it the look of something that has been up all night with a book. The green zigzags across its chest are nerikomi: coloured clays stacked and sliced before the owl was modelled, so the pattern runs through the body and shows underneath. Slice a block twice and you get two related owls, never the same one. Round, solid, and happy alone on a shelf.
Nerikomi: the pattern is built through the clay before the piece is formed, and every piece is cut by hand, so no two are identical.
