The proportions are the joke, and the joke is intentional: a very long, very low dog frozen mid-stretch, front paws down, rear end up, the pose every dog does first thing in the morning. The charcoal spots are nerikomi, laid into the clay before the dog was formed rather than painted on afterwards, so they fall differently on every one. Eighteen centimetres of shelf, and it makes people smile before they have asked what it is.
Nerikomi: the pattern is built through the clay before the piece is formed, and every piece is cut by hand, so no two are identical.
