Why No Two Nerikomi Pieces Are Alike: Inside the Process

Six Points Where Variation Enters

The specific points in the nerikomi process where variation enters, and why a maker cannot repeat a pattern even when they want to.

A nerikomi maker cannot repeat a pattern exactly, even deliberately, because the pattern is created inside a block of clay that changes shape every time it is cut. This is not a tolerance problem to be engineered away. It is the technique functioning as intended.

Variation point one: colouring the clay

Each batch of coloured clay is mixed by hand, by wedging stain or oxide through raw clay until the colour is even. Two batches mixed a week apart will differ slightly in saturation, because the amount of stain, the moisture in the clay and the amount of working all shift.

This is why the same design made in spring and in autumn can read as slightly different colours. Nothing has gone wrong. It is also why a maker will often produce a design in one concentrated run rather than returning to it repeatedly.

Variation point two: building the block

The maker stacks coloured clay into a loaf. Sheets are rolled by hand, so no two are precisely the same thickness. A sheet a millimetre thicker produces a visibly wider stripe in every slice taken from that block.

The stack is then compressed to drive out air, and compression is never perfectly even. The layers distort in the direction of the pressure, which is what gives nerikomi its characteristic slight waver rather than mechanical straightness. A perfectly straight nerikomi stripe would actually be a sign that something other than hand-building was involved.

Variation point three: the cut

This is the big one.

Slices are cut from the block, and each cut deforms what remains. The wire or blade drags the clay slightly as it passes. By the time the maker reaches the tenth slice, the block is measurably different from when they cut the first.

So slices from a single loaf are a sequence, not a set. The first and the last are recognisably related and clearly not identical. Ask a maker to reproduce slice three and they cannot, because slice three no longer exists and neither does the block that produced it.

Variation point four: forming

The slices are laid into or over a form and worked into shape. Any stretching drags the pattern with it. A slice pressed into a curve will show the pattern widening on the outside of the bend and compressing on the inside.

Where two slices meet, there is a seam. The maker closes it, but the pattern will not line up across the join in any predictable way. Those junctions are one of the clearest signatures of genuine nerikomi, and one of the first things to look for when you are checking whether a piece is what it claims to be.

Variation point five: scraping back

During forming, the pattern blurs as clay smears across the surface. The maker scrapes the surface back to sharpen it again.

How deep they scrape changes what you see. Scrape a fraction deeper and you reveal a slightly different layer of the pattern, because the pattern extends through the thickness. Two pieces cut from adjacent slices can end up looking further apart than they started, purely because of how they were finished.

This is the step that most surprises people. The pattern is not fixed when the slice is cut. It is still being revealed during finishing.

Variation point six: the kiln

Different coloured clays shrink at slightly different rates. Where two colours meet, that difference creates stress. Most pieces survive it. Some do not, and they crack along a colour boundary.

Kiln position matters too. A piece near the elements sees a slightly different temperature from one at the centre, and colour response shifts with temperature. A single firing can produce pieces that read warmer at one end of the kiln than the other.

What this means when you buy

Expect the photograph to be representative rather than exact. The piece you receive will share the design, the palette and the technique. It will not be a copy of the one photographed. Any shop selling genuine nerikomi should say so plainly.

Expect visible seams, slight pattern waver and colour that varies in depth across a single piece. These are the technique's fingerprints.

What you should not accept: a crack through the body, a piece that will not stand level, or a pattern that is clearly printed rather than built. If two pieces are identical, it is not nerikomi.

How to check a piece in your hand

  • Turn it over. The unglazed foot should show the same pattern as the walls, because it is the same clay all the way through.
  • Look inside. The pattern should continue, and it should relate to the outside without matching it, because you are seeing a different depth of the same wall.
  • Find the seams. Faint interruptions where slices met. Their presence is reassuring rather than alarming.
  • Compare two. If a shop has more than one of a design, hold them together. Genuine pieces will differ visibly.

Living with a one-of-a-kind object

There is a practical consequence to all this that people rarely think about before buying: you cannot replace it.

If you break one of six matching factory plates you buy another. If you break a nerikomi piece, the closest you can get is a relative of it. That is worth knowing before you put one somewhere precarious, and it is an argument for treating these as Curator objects, chosen and placed deliberately, rather than as everyday ware.

Why not just mould it?

A fair question: if the technique loses pieces in the kiln and cannot repeat itself, why not mould or print the pattern and keep the look without the cost?

Because the look is not the point. The structure is. A printed marble pattern sits on the surface, wears at the high points first, and reveals plain clay wherever life touches it. A nerikomi pattern is the wall of the piece: the same clay all the way through, which is why the unglazed foot and the inside show the pattern too. Nothing can wear off, because there is no off.

Moulding would also produce the exact thing nerikomi buyers are choosing against: sameness. The technique's inefficiency and its appeal are the same fact seen from two sides, which is a strange thing to say about a production method and true of very few of them.

Common questions

Can a maker reproduce a nerikomi pattern on request?

They can rebuild the same design, but not the same piece. A commission will share the palette and structure and differ in the specifics.

Are seams in nerikomi a fault?

No. Seams are where hand-laid slices meet. A completely seamless piece suggests a mould or a surface treatment rather than true nerikomi.

Why does the pattern look different inside and outside?

Because you are seeing different depths of the same clay. The pattern runs through the wall, so the inner and outer faces are two different cross-sections.

Does more variation mean lower quality?

No. Variation is inherent to the process. Quality is judged on structural soundness, how well seams are closed, how cleanly the pattern is scraped back, and whether the piece stands true.

How many pieces come from one clay block?

It depends on the size of the loaf and the thickness of each slice, but the number is small, and the later slices differ noticeably from the earlier ones. This is why nerikomi designs tend to appear in very short runs.

Is the variation deliberate or accidental?

Both. The maker controls the design of the pattern and chooses the palette. What they cannot control is exactly how each slice comes out, and that is accepted as part of the technique rather than fought.

Is nerikomi stronger or weaker than plain ceramic?

Slightly more failure-prone in the kiln, because colour boundaries shrink at different rates. A piece that has survived firing is as usable as any handmade ceramic. Just be gentle with temperature at the colour joins.

Ask a maker to reproduce slice three and they cannot. Slice three no longer exists.
