Substantial does not mean expensive. It means the gift has enough presence to sit in the middle of a table and hold the room. A carafe with its tumblers. A planter with an elephant's face on it. A bowl big enough for the whole salad. Between ₹1,000 and ₹2,500 is where our pieces stop being an accent and start being the object people talk about, and it is the band for the people who matter most on the Diwali list: the parents, the in-laws, the couple who hosted you, the sibling on Bhai Dooj.

Everything here is handmade in short runs, priced at what it costs today, and in the Gifts ₹1,000 to 2,500 collection. We have left the apparel out of that collection on purpose: sizes run one of each and a gift that might not fit is not a gift. Buying for a smaller budget? Our Diwali gifts under ₹1,500 guide covers that band.

The sets

A set feels like a bigger gift than its price because it arrives complete.

Bedside carafe and tumbler sets, ₹1,499. A glass carafe with a tumbler that sits upturned on top as the lid. Amber, cobalt blue, teal, sky blue, lime green and honey. It lives on a bedside table, a desk, a kitchen counter, and it is the gift almost nobody buys for themselves and everybody uses every night once they have it. Six colours means you can choose for the person rather than for the room. Our handblown glass guide explains why the colour sits inside the glass rather than on it.

The Chai Hour kettle, ₹1,999. A ceramic kettle with a cane handle, hand-painted in four patterns: pink tile, yellow tile, sky daisy and blue floral. It is a teapot with the presence of a piece of furniture, and it is the single thing in the studio we would give a mother.

The Star Lariat anti-tarnish set, ₹1,399. A lariat necklace set in blue, and the one piece of imitation jewellery in this band. Like all of ours it is imitation jewellery, gold-toned plating over a brass base, and it should be kept dry and put on after perfume.

Nerikomi, and why it costs what it costs

Most of this band is nerikomi, so it is worth a paragraph on what that is. Nerikomi is a technique, not a place or a maker. Coloured clays are layered, pressed together and cut through, so that the pattern runs all the way through the body of the piece. It is not painted on and it cannot wear off. The zigzags, rings and feathers on our planters and figurines are inside the clay, and because each block is cut by hand no two pieces carry the same pattern. That is the reason a nerikomi planter costs ₹2,499 and a hand-painted one costs ₹899, and it is the reason a nerikomi gift is one nobody else will have. Our nerikomi guide covers the technique in full, and why no two nerikomi pieces are alike shows what the variation looks like in practice.

Planters, ₹2,499

Two animals, seven patterns. The Hathi elephant in coral zigzag, saffron zigzag, golden feathers and rust rings. The Moo Mood cow in rust rings, teal zigzag and charcoal zigzag. Each holds a plant, and each is a face on a windowsill for the years after the plant. The gift for someone who keeps a balcony garden, or who says they want to start one.

Figurines, ₹1,499 to 1,799

Small enough for a desk, a shelf, a puja corner. The Catnap reclining cat in indigo or charcoal. The little Hathi elephant in indigo, charcoal and ochre, or golden ochre. The spotted dog. The Chashma owl at ₹1,799 in coral, which wears its spectacles well. These are the gift for the person who has everything, because whichever one you choose, they do not have that one.

Bell hangings, ₹1,999 to 2,499

A nerikomi animal with a small ceramic bell beneath it, made to hang by a door or a window. Owls in rust rings, blue zigzag, ochre zigzag and ochre and slate. Turtles in blue floral, rust rings, ochre floral and sunset orange. Cats in blue zigzag and rust rings. And the monkey on a branch swing at ₹2,499, which is the largest and the one children ask about. They chime when a door opens, which in the week of Diwali is often.

Bowls, ₹1,499

The Dune speckled nerikomi bowls in cream and indigo, deep blue and sea green. The one piece of nerikomi that goes on the table rather than on the shelf, and the one to give a host.

The serving pieces

For the person who feeds twenty people in Diwali week and is short of exactly this.

  • Fluted ceramic salad bowl, blue rim, ₹1,999. The bowl most hosts do not own and most need. It carries the raita, the salad, the chaat.
  • Radial ceramic salad bowl, indigo, ₹1,499. Hand-painted lines running out from the centre like a compass. The smaller of the two.
  • Chevron bottle vase, indigo, ₹1,299. For the marigolds, and for the months when there are no marigolds.

Our guide to table settings shows how the bowls sit with the ₹599 plates from the tier below, if you want to build a gift across both.

One for the nursery

The embroidered wool-felt bird nursery mobile, ₹1,799. Felt birds on a felt branch, made to hang above a cot. It is the gift for the couple whose Diwali is also their first with a baby, and it needs a hook rather than a nail, which matters in a rented flat. Wool felt at home covers why felt is the right material for that room.

Matching the piece to the person

Give it to Reach for Why
Parents The Chai Hour kettle, a carafe set in their colour Used daily, and it looks like the occasion it was given for
The host The fluted salad bowl, a Dune nerikomi bowl The serving piece they are short of, and it goes straight on the table
A couple A pair of carafe sets, one each Two bedside tables, two colours, one gift
The sibling on Bhai Dooj A nerikomi figurine Personal, small, and nobody else has that one
The balcony gardener An elephant or cow planter A face on the windowsill for years after the plant
A new baby in the house The felt bird mobile Soft, hangs from a hook, made for that room

Building a gift across the band

The band is wide enough that two pieces can add up to one gift and still land under ₹2,500.

  • A Dune nerikomi bowl and two stripe plates. ₹1,499 plus two at ₹599. A serving set for a host, in a colour you chose.
  • A carafe set and a coaster pair. ₹1,499 plus ₹799. A bedside table, complete.
  • A nerikomi figurine and a trinket dish. ₹1,499 plus ₹399. A desk, sorted.

The tier below has the plates, coasters and trinket dishes; our guides to Diwali gifts under ₹1,500 and Diwali gifts under ₹1,000 list them by exact price.

What to tell them about care

Nerikomi and hand-painted ceramics are fired for use. Hand wash, avoid taking a piece from the fridge to a hot surface, and it lasts for years. The planters have no drainage hole unless the listing says otherwise, so a nursery pot inside is the way to use them. Glass carafes are hand wash too. The full guidance is in how to care for handmade ceramics, and passing it on with the gift is a kindness rather than a lecture.

Common questions

What is a good Diwali gift for parents under ₹2,500?

The Chai Hour kettle at ₹1,999, or a carafe and tumbler set at ₹1,499 in a colour chosen for them. Both are used every day and both look like the occasion.

Why is nerikomi more expensive than hand-painted ceramic?

The pattern is made by layering and cutting coloured clays so it runs through the piece, rather than being painted on the surface. It takes longer, it cannot wear off, and no two pieces are the same.

Do the nerikomi planters have a drainage hole?

Check the individual listing. Where there is none, use a nursery pot inside the planter, which is how most people use decorative planters anyway.

Is a ₹1,500 gift appropriate for a boss or a client?

Yes, and a nerikomi figurine is a good choice because it is personal without being intimate. See our corporate gifting guide for how to handle a list.

Can I give two pieces from different tiers as one gift?

That is often the best gift in this band. A bowl and two plates, a carafe set and coasters, a figurine and a trinket dish.

Is shipping free?

Yes, on every order, with no minimum.

Are these pieces one of a kind?

Each nerikomi piece carries its own pattern because the clay is cut by hand, so yes, the one you receive is the only one with that exact pattern. The design, the elephant or the cow, is made in a small run.

When should I order for Diwali?

October. Diwali is 8 November 2026 and these pieces are made in small runs, so the pattern you want is more likely to be there early. Allow up to 10 business days for delivery.

A set feels like a bigger gift than its price because it arrives complete.
